In the beginning there was a garden. It was called the Garden of Eden. The Bible says in Genesis 2:8 that it was our God Almighty who first planted a garden: "the Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden".
In the end, too, there is a garden. The Book of Revelation 22:2 states: "In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations". Incidentally, coconut is the only fruit that bears continously throughout the year and it is also often called the tree of life.
Meanwhile while on earth, we plant gardens....... "paradise of pleasure". Our word "paradise" comes, via the Greek "paradeisos", from the old Persian word "pairidaeza", which simply meant a "walled enclosure" (originally a hunting park for the king). Historically, it seems, we first had gardens, then imagined heavenly ones. The idea of the garden as paradise is always there, ready to be summoned by that part of our nature that seems to love it.
